“To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything. It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies us for any difficulty life can throw at us.” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God
The first time I heard Known by Tauren Wells, something deep within me awakened. A hidden part of me sat up and took notice as the lyrics and melody spoke directly to that private part of my soul. The part that still struggles with the fallout of being a child of divorce and a daughter rejected by her dad. If you’ve experienced this life trauma, you can relate. To grow up desiring to be known and loved by one of your parents, and never receiving the fulfillment of that dream, leaves an ache inside of you that is very hard to soothe. In fact, it can start you on a path of desperately attempting to fill that void with all the wrong things and all the wrong people. So, when you finally find that person – whether it’s a friend or a future spouse – who does love you, truly, and does know you, fully…it’s like a warm shower on a bitterly cold day. When you finally realize God Himself truly loves you even though he fully knows EVERYTHING about you, it’s like a gushing waterfall after years of drought. It’s like the flicker of a flame after decades in darkness. It is a balm that soothes the ache. I encourage you to listen to this amazing song right now. But, only if you want to feel fully embraced in divine love and ridiculous grace right in the middle of your day.
I absolutely love that Tauren was inspired by the Tim Keller quote above in writing Known. You can find about more about that and the story behind other songs you hear on WCIC right here.
