24 Habits of a Healthy Marriage

By Tara Buchanan

Joe & I are celebrating 24 years of marriage this month! In honor of our anniversary, these are 24 habits we try to practice each day to keep our marriage strong!

  1. Pray with each together and for each other.
  2. Forgive each other. Keep short lists.
  3. Greet each other warmly whenever you come or go!
  4. Serve each other. Find one way each day to make their day easier.
  5. Spend time together. Find activities that you both enjoy doing.
  6. Read God's Word or a short devotional together. Grow together in your walk with Jesus!
  7. Offer a genuine apology when you mess up.
  8. Learn something new about your spouse.
  9. Speak highly of your spouse, especially when he or she is not around!
  10. Compliment your spouse. In the big ways and the small ways.
  11. Talk with each other often. Listen more.
  12. Be your spouse’s #1 fan and encourage them daily!
  13. Think positively about your spouse and assume the best.
  14. Put your spouse ahead of your kids.
  15. Offer grace when your spouse messes up. Don't keep a scorecard and worry about what your spouse deserves!
  16. Dream together. Healthy couples talk about their future together!
  17. Accept influence from your spouse. Iron sharpens iron.
  18. Express appreciation as often as possible.
  19. Clarify expectations. Be vulnerable enough to share what it is you need or desire.
  20. Be generous in showing affection. The longer-than-usual hug or surprise kiss can communicate love without saying a word!

  1. Share inside jokes. Secrets only the two of you share builds intimacy.
  2. Let your spouse win. You don’t have to be right every time.
  3. Say I love you often.
  4. Don’t take yourselves so seriously that you forget to laugh. Try to make your spouse laugh every day!
