One of the challenges of marriage is learning to be “naked and unashamed” like it says in Genesis 2. Something about marriage involves letting someone else truly see all of you: the good, the bad, the ugly. That’s what grows intimacy. When we can’t do that, we end up hiding. The fear of being exposed and rejected is too much.
That’s been part of our marriage story. When Joe and I first got married, we started an epic game of hide and seek. Joe wasn’t aware of the many ways marriage would further expose his past wounds and vulnerabilities. No matter how much I looked for him, he felt safer hiding. We both wanted emotional intimacy, but we didn’t know how to get there.
