Joe could feel it, sneaking up on him again. Mother’s Day was coming. The reminder of the hurt and loss he suffered through as a child. He describes it as missing a limb that he never had. It was like an emotional dam bursting as the holiday drew closer: Why did my own mother not love me? What is wrong with me? Why does it still hurt, decades later?
Mother’s Day carries a lot of baggage for Joe and consequently for our marriage and we still haven’t figured out what to do with it. It’s complicated, and that’s okay. If you struggle with celebrating Mother’s Day, you’re not alone. But there is hope and healing as we submit those hurts to God and let His love have the final word in our lives.
