Sometimes I get mad at Joe. Like something he said or did starts to bother me, and maybe it shows up in my face. Then as Joe is trying to figure it out, bless his heart, he often approaches the situation with, “Are you mad at me”? Unfortunately, that rarely works in getting me to feel comfortable in sharing what’s bothering me.
Situations like that put us both on the defensive. He’s worried about what he did wrong, and I’m worried that he will dismiss my hurt. The solution is communicating in a way that is honest and empathetic. More like Proverbs 15:1; A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
