Lyrics

You are my joy, You are my song
You are the well, the One I’m drawing from
You are my refuge, my whole life long
Where else would I go?

Surely my God is the strength of my soul
Your love defends me, Your love defends me
And when I feel like I’m all alone
Your love defends me, Your love defends me

Day after day, night after night
I will remember, You’re with me in this fight
Although the battle, it rages on
The war already won
I know the war is already won

Surely my God is the strength of my soul
Your love defends me, Your love defends me
And when I feel like I’m all alone
Your love defends me, Your love defends me

We sing Hallelujah
You’re my portion
My salvation
Hallelujah

Surely my God is the strength of my soul
Your love defends me, Your love defends me
And when I feel like I’m all alone
Your love defends me, Your love defends me
Surely my God is the strength of my soul
Your love defends me, Your love defends me
And when I feel like I’m all alone
Your love defends me, Your love defends me

We sing Hallelujah
You’re my portion
My salvation
Hallelujah
You’re my portion
My salvation

Hallelujah
You’re my portion
My salvation

About This Song

a few notes from Joe B., Music Director

First single from a new album coming later this year. From the first time I heard this song I couldn’t help but be consumed by this idea of how awesome it is that God is our refuge. I know first hand that it doesn’t always feel like God is protecting us against the evils of this world. Sometimes we do have to go through things for reasons we may never know on this side of heaven. (Tim Keller said this; God will either give us what we ask for in prayer or give us what we would have asked for if we knew everything he knows.) But, I also believe there are times in our lives when God will say “Enough!” to those things in life that would bring harm to us. He loves us so much. He is our strength. He understands us. We all want to be known and loved for being known. But as humans it’s so difficult sometimes to believe that others will love us through all of our issues and short comings. I believe that’s a big reason people don’t always come to God fully transparent. Songs like this one remind us that we can come to God without holding anything back. And, that His love is greater than any fear. He has a way through whatever we’re facing and He can and will protect us.

"In Romans chapter 7, Paul talks about his own inconsistencies and how no matter how hard he tries he can’t always do the right thing. And he says toward the end of the chapter, the answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something different. God stands at our defense and His love compels us to stay close to HIM, living lives that Glorify Him.” - Matt Maher
