Summer’s Last Blast

Those school bells are just itching to ring…you can feel it. But, summer’s not quite done; there are still some incredible memories to be made. Are there some family traditions you haven’t got around to yet? For the Traceys, we’re still looking for a chance to hit Six Flags St. Louis {or Great America for that matter}. We just need to make sure to stop by the bank first, right?

My hubs Jeremy wants to carve out some time to go hiking or camping at Starved Rock State Park as well as to grab some ice cream at Uncle Bob’s in Eureka. I don’t think we’ll hit both in one day, though.

We talked about this yesterday on the show and got some great suggestions of Last Blast activities in and near Illinois:

Jennifer recommends Matthiessen State Park {especially if you’re already headed to Starved Rock..it’s practically next door} because it has lots of beautiful waterfalls and more easy-level trails!

Karen in Lyndon recommends kayaking on the Hennepin Canal. Dawn from Sweetwater says Raging Rivers Waterpark in Grafton, IL is a great place for a lot of family fun. Jeff from Springfield thinks you should take four or five hours on the day before school starts and visit as many local parks as you can with your family and enjoy the playgrounds and trails. {Love that idea!}

For some learning opportunities, James recommends visiting the prehistoric native civilization found at Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville, or checking out Mark Twain’s hometown in historic Hannibal, MO. And, Cheryl in Dawson recommends taking a day to visit Lincoln’s Home and the town of New Salem.

Kelly says he loves taking his kids to the St. Louis Zoo. The best part is getting into the zoo is free, although you do have to pay for parking and some attractions.

Barb loves to go to the stock car races in Spoon River with her family.

Rod thinks everyone should go meteorite or stargazing somewhere nice and dark. The Perseid Meteor Shower is coming up and it’s supposed to be awesome this year.

What activities are you still hoping to fit in before summer’s over and we go into full fall mode? Share your suggestion in the comments below, and don’t forget to add a link!
