The View From 40

I was sitting in front of my TV with the PlayStation 3 I’d received as an early birthday present. As I eagerly typed in my birth date so I could set up a game, my daughter gasped, “Wow, you’re old!”

Yup, I’m turning the big 4-0 this week but, surprisingly, I’m at peace with it.

I remember turning 30 and the overwhelming feelings I had about leaving my 20’s behind. I no longer fit the description of young person. I was no longer the youngest guy in the office. I was finally, without a shadow of a doubt, an adult.

Yeah, I freaked a little over 30, but I’m embracing this new decade. I like where I am in my life. I feel settled. Sure, I have more gray hairs on my chest than I did 10 years ago, but with them come life experience.

I react differently. Things that really upset me at 30 don’t bother me as much now. For example, the other day I left the mall to find that someone had scratched the side of my car in the parking lot. In younger years I’d pitch a fit and let it bother me for days. Now? Well, I was highly irritated. But, I quickly moved from anger to…“What am I going to do about it?”  I wasted so much emotional energy in the past and for what? The potential of a stress-induced heart attack?! No, thanks!

I’m more comfortable in my own skin. I’m no 1980’s-Terminator-buff Schwarzenegger, but that’s okay. I’m me.

I’m less concerned about what others think. This is especially freeing. In the past I’d let fear of what others think keep me from trying new things or just enjoying the moment. Done with that!

Overall, I have a deeper sense of God’s love for me and the fact that life on this earth is temporary. The worries of today are gone tomorrow and there’s always going to be a new challenge or joy around the corner. My prayer is that tomorrow is full of more contentment, peace, and a truer connection with God…for you and me.

Landmark birthdays are awesome for taking stock of our lives, but the reality is each day is a new opportunity to embrace more of what God has for us. So…Happy Birthday to me and congrats to you on the gift of today! It’s one of a kind and non-refundable, so enjoy.

Oh, and how’s the view from 40? I can see for miles and miles!
