Trinity Lutheran Church and School will host a discussion built around the book and movie of "The Shack".

This discussion is part of the ongoing series "Christ in the Culture" that picks topics of pop culture interest and how they relate to matters of faith.

The Shack tells the story of a father spiraling into depression after a family tragedy. He receives a mysterious invitation to meet God at The Shack. There, he wrestles with his faith as he confronts his grief and anger towards the events in his life.

The Shack is a 2007 book by WM. Paul Young and was made into a 2017 movie starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer.

The way the Holy Trinity is depicted in some rather unconventional forms sparked controversy among many church leaders at the time the book and the movie were released.

Due to the length of the movie and to allow plenty of discussion time, those interested in attending are encourage to read the book and/or view the movie before this evening.

This event is free and open to the public.

Community Bible Study Peoria Evening Class invites you to study "Red Sea to the Jordan River" (Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers) for 2017-2018.

The Bible Study is for men, women and children of every denomination and every level of understanding.

This is a 30 week study that tells the story of how God delivered His chosen people, the Israelites, from Egyptian slavery and established them as a new nation. The books tell of a holy God's faithfulness to weak and sinful people.

Biblical themes like doubt and faith, complaining and grace, crisis and intercession, and failure and repentance provide numerous opportunities for spiritual growth through this CBS study. All leaders in CBS are volunteers.

The small registration fee (adults $35, children infant-teens $10) and weekly free-will offerings cover the cost of producing materials and annual gift to host church.

Participants grow in knowledge and their relationship with the Living God through individual study (answering questions and reading commentary on selected Bible passages), small group discussions (weekly sharing of answers and insights in small groups led by a trained leader), and effective teaching (lecture presented by the Teaching Director, a trained lay leader).

The class will meet every Thursday from September 7 to May 3.

First Christian Church announced that it will host the Illinois Regional Qualifying Speech and Debate Tournament sponsored by The National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA).

The three day speech and debate tournament will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, January 25, 2018 through Saturday, January 27, 2018. Over 150 students from a six-state region will gather to compete in eleven speech categories and two debate styles.

Community judges are needed! Community judges are a vital part of NCFCA’s tournament structure, and 250 community members are needed to serve as volunteer judges for this event. Volunteers will serve approximately three hours, listening and giving feedback to the competitors and enjoying refreshments provided by local vendors. No experience is necessary as orientation will be provided before each round.

Cody Monkman, Minister of Community Impact and Care at First Christian Church, explains, "This is a great opportunity for community volunteers to invest in students. Last year, I remember thinking I was unqualified to be a judge. After doing it, I was so glad that I volunteered. I left encouraged knowing that there are young people who are striving to be the best leaders for tomorrow."

For more information, volunteers may e-mail the address or visit the website linked above.

About NCFCA: The National Christian Forensics and Communications Association is a national speech and debate league that trains students to think critically and communicate effectively by offering tournaments to homeschool students ages 12 through 18.
