Lyrics

Blessed be Your name
In the land that is plentiful
When the streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing you pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s all as it should be
Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing you pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord blessed be Your name

Every blessing you pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in Lord
Still I’m gonna say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name (Jesus)
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord blessed be Your name

About This Song

“Blessed Be Your Name” is one approach to grief and lament, a theme that to this day remains with all of us. This song does not focus just on lament, but instead takes the worshiper on a journey. It's a song of blessing God’s name in times of abundance and in times of wilderness. Similarly, there is also a balance of blessing God in good times and bad.

In all seasons of life, this song calls us to bless the name of God. Though unproblematic when life is going well, it is certainly a tall order to bless God for many who have experienced intense grief or the loss of a loved one. The bridge reinforces this call to bless God in all circumstances:

You give and take away;
My heart will choose to say,
“Lord, blessed be Your name.”

As the Psalmist declares in Psalm 135, this blessed name of God “endures forever,” and God’s renown endures through all generations. May it be so!
