Lyrics

There was a time that I swore I would never go back
I was blind to the truth, didn’t know what I had
I was running, I was searching
But every place I turned for healing
Left me more broken than the last

Take me back
To the place that feels like home
To the people I can depend on
To the faith that’s in my bones
Take me back
To a preacher and a verse
Where they’ve seen me at my worst
To the love I had at first
Oh, I want to go to church

Tried to walk on my own but I wound up lost
Now I’m making my way to the foot of the cross
It’s not a trophy for the winners
It’s a shelter for the sinners
And it’s right where I belong

Take me back
To the place that feels like home
To the people I can depend on
To the faith that’s in my bones
Take me back
To a preacher and a verse
Where they’ve seen me at my worst
To the love I had at first
Oh, I want to go to church
I want to go to church

Oh, more than an obligation
It’s our foundation
The family of God
I know it’s hard
But we need each other
We’re sisters and brothers

Oh, take me back
To the place that feels like home
To the people I can depend on
To the faith that’s in my bones
Take me back
To a preacher and a verse
Where they’ve seen me at my worst
To the love I had at first
Oh, I want to go to church

Yeah, I want to go to church
Oh, I want to go, want to go, I want to go
Oh, I want to go to church
Oh, I want to go to church

About This Song

a few notes from Joe B., Music Director

"We had had some drama go down at our church. It was a Thursday afternoon and after some of that had gone done, people had been reconciled to each other. I found myself super thankful to have a community of believers where you could have that happen, where there could be something go on between 2 people, but by the Spirit and the Word you could still live in harmony with each other. And I began to be so thankful for the Church itself and the Church's impact in my life and how they had disciples me and grown me up." - Michael Cochren.

God made us for relationship. Relationship with Him and each other. From birth we cannot survive without human relationship. And in Genesis 2:18 the Bible tells us that "God said it is not good for us to be alone." And yet, three out of ever four Americans say they are lonely. This according to a study from researchers at the University of California, San Diego in December of 2018. Researchers also found that nearly 60% of Americans say that nobody really knows them. The research has also revealed that Social Media plays a role in this. More people believe they have more friends than ever. However, the same research shows a large percentage of these same people say they would have no one to turn to if they needed money for a catastrophic emergency. Modern technology has made it possible for us to distance ourselves from each other. Multiple studies have shown that this distancing has led to many health issues including anxiety and a rising number of panic attacks.

Maybe that's why God wanted us to "not forsaking our own assembling together...but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near." Hebrews 10:25-31 I believe this song has the potential to remind people of the importance and benefits of being apart of a community of believers who know and love them. Maybe God will use this song to help reduce those negative numbers in future studies.
