Lyrics

Spent a long time running down a dead end road
Lookin for that something that could fill my soul
Never found what I was searching for
Spent a long time running from a messed up past
But you can’t go forward when you’re lookin back
But I ain’t looking back anymore

He called my name
And he stole my shame
Everything changed when I came running home
Out of the dark, into His arms
No more running away, I’m running home

No more running in circles, trying to be good enough
I’m far from perfect, but I found perfect love
In the arms that won’t let go
Got a heart on fire, got a wind at my back
Singing hallelujah, I am free at last
Every day I’m running home

He called my name
And he stole my shame
Everything changed when I came running home
Out of the dark, into His arms
No more running away, I’m running home

Gonna run this race ‘til my final step
Gonna sing this song ‘til my final breath
And let the weight of this world go
Gonna be no tears, gonna be no pain
And when I see that smile on my Savior’s face
I won’t be walking, I’ll be running home

He called my name
And he stole my shame
Everything changed when I came running home
Out of the dark, into His arms
No more running away, I’m running home

About This Song

This song is a revisit of the story of the prodigal son story. But it's my story too. I had my years of wondering and my years of thinking that I can change my worldview from that of what I grew up in to live a life separate from church and Christianity. I realized it was making me more and more miserable. I wanted to return home. I felt this call in my life to come back to the arms of Christ. But I couldn't shake this view of God (like the prodigal son returning) that if I returned, God would just be waiting in anger to punish me. As if the father met his son beating him with a whip. And that's not how the story ends at all. It ends with the father running to meet the son throwing a robe on his back, a ring on his finger, and a kiss on his cheek. And that's the welcome home that I received. I wrote this song to let people know this is the welcome home waiting for them. Everything really does change when we return to that comfort and rest of home in the hands of God.
