Lyrics

If I were You I would’ve given up on me by now
I would’ve labeled me a lost cause
Cause I feel just like a lost cause

If I were You I would’ve turned around and walked away
I would’ve labeled me beyond repair
Cause I feel like I’m beyond repair

But somehow You don’t see me like I do
Somehow You’re still here

You’re the God who stays
You’re the God who stays
You’re the one who runs in my direction
When the whole world walks away
You’re the God who stands
With wide open arms
And You tell me nothing I have ever done can separate my heart
From the God who stays

I used to hide
Every time I thought I let You down
I always thought I had to earn my way
But I’m learning You don’t work that way

Somehow You don’t see me like I do
Somehow You’re still here

You’re the God who stays
You’re the God who stays
You’re the one who runs in my direction
When the whole world walks away
You’re the God who stands
With wide open arms
And You tell me nothing I have ever done can separate my heart
From the God who stays

My shame can’t separate
My guilt can’t separate
My past can’t separate
I’m Yours forever

My sin can’t separate
My scars can’t separate
My failures can’t separate
I’m Yours forever

No enemy can separate
No power of hell can take away
Your love for me will never change
I’m Yours forever

You’re the God who stays
You’re the God who stays
You’re the one who runs in my direction
When the whole world walks away
You’re the God who stands
With wide open arms
And You tell me nothing I have ever done can separate my heart
From the God who stays
You’re the God who stays
You’re the one who runs in my direction
When the whole world walks away
You’re the God who stands
With wide open arms
And You tell me nothing I have ever done can separate my heart
From the God who stays

About This Song

If we were all to be totally honest and transparent, I believe we would each admit that we struggle from time to time knowing we are valued and loved. We can, at times, buy into this idea that our shame, guilt, failures, past, scars, and sin separates us from His amazing love. That somehow we have disqualified ourselves. That maybe God is already left us. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8. Knowing we couldn't earn our way, God took care of it for us. I was recently studying Romans 5 and found these very cool thoughts -

"Notice that “demonstrates” is present tense and “died” is past tense. “God demonstrates his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The present tense implies that this demonstrating is an ongoing act that keeps happening today. And will keep happening tomorrow. Why did Paul use the present tense (“God demonstrates”)? I would have expected Paul to say, “God demonstrated (past tense) his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Was not the death of Christ, when it happened, the demonstration of God’s love? And did not that demonstration happen in the past?

We are living in a culture where nothing seems to last any more. We also experience this love all around us that is full of conditions. Many of us grew up believing we would never measure up. Trying so desperately to earn love. How refreshing it is to know that there is a One who not only loves us without condition but is also One who will never leave us. No matter what.
